Best of the Best: 5 great trail runs in the foothills

Great trails for running in the foothills of Colorado

Nothing feels quite like a good long run in the mountains, up hills and through aspens, over a creek and to the peak.

I love trail running, though I’m not that good at it. If one of these trails interests you and you want a slow companion, let’s plan a time to run together!

Alderfer/3 Sisters

Located in Evergreen, just south of the lake, is an incredible park with multiple groomed trails. Take the Evergreen Mountain trail for an easy 5 mile roundtrip run to the top of Evergreen Mountain. The way up can be steep, but the way down is easy with good trails and flat near the end. The top has a loop that you can run around multiple times if you want extra distance.

The other side of the park features gravel trails as well as some vertical tree climbing trails. The gravel trails go down in feet for a long time so the way back up can be long.

Flying J Ranch Park

Located in Conifer, this park has acres to explore with various trails. Best of all, most of the trails involve minimal vertical feet incline so it can be a scenic, peaceful run without too hard of a climb.

Mount Falcon Park

Located between Morrison and Indian Hills, take the Mount Falcon Castle trail for around 7.5 miles loop up nearly 2,000 feet with incredible views and historical landmarks.

Red Rocks Trading Post Trail

At Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison. This trail is only 1.6 miles long but it’s through the historic red rocks filled with dinosaur tracks and, possibly, the sounds of live music.

Silver Dollar Lake Trail

Near Mt. Blue Sky outside of Georgetown and down the road from Echo Ski, take the 4 mile loop to Silver Dollar Lake.
