7 Benefits to Moving to the Mountains

So you want to move to the mountains? Need I convince you anymore? Here are 7 benefits to taking the plunge and moving into the trees!

1. Health benefits: The mountains bring you fresh mountain air that is crisp and clean. The mountains make you more active - from hiking to shoveling snow! The mountains being a higher altitude, you often drink less alcohol (both because you don’t need as much and because it dries you out more) so you can cut down on the negative affects of drinking! Studies have shown that higher altitude living, while in nature, can help attention spans, lower blood-sugar, improve your immune system and decrease anxiety: a general increase in well-being. Come on!

2. Outdoor activities: The mountains bring a slew of activities for every type person: Hiking, biking, trail running, paddle boarding, skiing, snow shoeing, ice fishing, fly fishing, four-wheeling, white-water rafting, and more. Whatever it is you’re in to, or want to try, we have it up here in the foothills.

3. Great community: We moved to the mountains to gain better community both in our neighborhood and school. We expected good things, but we have been blown away. Everyone that lives in the mountains wants to live in the mountains. No one is here by accident. So you find people who love where they live and, in turn, love their life! People are kind and welcoming, they are outdoorsy and fun, they believe in helping each other and building the community they want to live in. Now, you have to understand that people also move to the mountains for peace and solitude, but overall, we have been floored by the intentionality of people who live here.

4. Amazing schools: Another reason we moved to the mountains was for quality schools. We live in Evergreen and the schools have been academically challenging while offering a plethora a of after-school activities, groups, clubs, field trips, class hikes and more. Teachers want to teach (and live) here so they are invested and learn your kids’ names and stories. Check out all the schools in the foothills, from public to private.

5. Family activities: For us, as a family of 6 with four boys, we are constantly looking for fun actitivies that will entertain various ages and not break the bank. Most of the activities involve getting outside which is good for everyone’s mental health, especially the children. From hiking and camping to paddle boarding and ice skating, there is so much to do with families in the foothills. Check out 6 great family activities to explore.

6. Peace and Quiet: While we wanted good community, active schools, and lots of fun family excursions, we also wanted to move to a place with less traffic, less headaches, quiet acreage, starry night skies and the quiet of wind through the pines. Not to be dramatic. But it’s true. And we could not be happier in Evergreen where we get all that and more. Now our only frustration is how many people come up from “down the hill” to hike on the weekends :)

7. Shopping Local: Most towns in the foothills have little to no corporate stores and restaurants. Sure there’s a Walmart or Wendy’s here and there, but for the most part, we spend our time shopping and eating at local establishments most often run by people who live in these mountain towns. We love to support our neighbors, plus the food is just that much better.

Let’s go!
